Sherpa has come out with new product line that we will be adding to our website slowly. Certain carrier models were discontinued by Sherpa, and we're going through the site and taking these models off. Please keep checking back as the website is being updated with new products. Our warehouse is not large so we try to keep our best selling products in stock, along with as many other items we can fit on the shelves. For this reason some items may not be in stock when ordered, but are still available. If you need a certain item by a specific date, please let us know when ordering in the comment section provided. Or you can email us and ask if that particular product is in house at the moment, or when it can be delivered by. We ship via USPS to all international locations so please use this shipping option when checking out.

Pet Tip of the Week:

Dietary Guidelines for Healthy Rabbits ADULT RABBITS: The basic diet for a healthy adult rabbit should consist of unlimited access to grass hay (not pelleted, cubed or chopped) along with a variety of fresh vegetables and a limited amount of timothy hay-based rabbit pellets---every day.

BABY RABBITS: Alfalfa pellets and hay should be available in unlimited quantities to baby rabbits starting at about three weeks of age. Hay is crucial to your rabbit's health as it is the main source of fiber/roughage which aids the digestion, helps prevent g.i. stasis and hairballs and it is helpful in keeping your rabbit's teeth in good shape. Grass hays should be available in unlimited quantities to all rabbits over three weeks of age. Pellets should always be fresh. Don't buy more than a month's supply at a time or they may get stale and lose nutritional value. By the time your rabbit is 7 months to 1 year old you should begin switching over to a timothy hay-based pellet, such as OxBow Hay's Bunny Basics/T. Vegetables should be fresh and free of pesticides. Feed at least 3 kinds of vegetables every day. Time balance is just as important as nutritional balance. Divide the pellets and vegetables between the morning and evening meals. Hay should always be available. Following are dietary recommendations for the different phases of your rabbit's life. ALL recommendations are based on a healthy rabbit. These are just guidelines. You should always consult your Rabbit Vet about diet and other health issues, especially for older, ailing or frail rabbits.

Pet Tip:  Keeping Ferrets Cool this Summer

When hot weather arrives, it is very important to make sure your pets do not overheat. Ferret are prone to heat stress, and temperatures over 85-90 F (29-32 C) are too hot, and overheating and heatstroke are a serious risk. Every effort should be made to keep your ferrets cage at a safe and comfortable temperature (low 70s F or low 20s C).

If you live in a climate where heat (or humidity) is a problem, consider air conditioning. If central air conditioning isn't feasible, invest in a room-sized air conditioner (if window mounted, make sure there is no room to escape). Make sure the cool air is not directed right onto your ferret cage, though.  Fans and ceiling fans can help circulate the air. Just be careful that they are out of reach of curious ferrets, and also make sure they are not directed right at the ferret cage.

Other Cooling Methods

  • Wash empty plastic bottles (inside and out) and remove labels. Fill nearly to the top with water (leave room for expansion) and freeze. Wrap frozen bottles in a towel and place in the cage. As the water thaws the condensation on the bottle will make the towel cool and damp so your ferret can lay on it if he or she wishes. If your ferret chews on plastic, you can freeze a block of ice and just wrap the ice in an extra-abosrbent towe.
  • Let your ferrets splash in cool shallow water the tub or a small pool.
  • If you have room and don't mind a bit of a mess while you are gone, place a frozen bottle of water with the cap of in a clean shallow pan and leave it in with your ferrets. Put a couple of thick towels around to contain the splashes.
  • A gentle misting with water can cool down your ferrets (only if they don't detest water, though).
  • Put some ice cubes in a dish; your ferrets can play and keep cool too.

Pet Tip:  Cat Behavior

Keeping Kitty off the Kitchen Counter

In all of my years with cats, ONLY the cats who regarded the counter tops as ´uninteresting´ would stay off of them. If you react when the cat jumps on the counter, they will learn to do that to get your attention. It´s best to make them realize there is nothing up there they want to see. When you are preparing food, or cooking in the kitchen, allow you new cat to see what you are doing. Either place a chair nearby so their eyes are at counter top level, or just lift the cat up to see there is nothing they are interested in. If you are cooking something they like, throw tiny tidbits or kitty treats on the chair for them. This will teach them to stay on the chair to get what they want, and it will keep them out from under your feet.
However, there are those cats who are willful and must be trained to not jump on the counters. For those cats, you can use one of those motion activated holiday decorations that make a noise and move around. We had a Jack O Lantern that would jump around and moan and groan with flashing eyes. That would startle Kitty into not wanting to go up there. Your goal is to associate jumping on the counter with something unpleasant, so add the Spray Bottle technique to this.
DON´T YELL AT KITTY OR SPANK HIM; that will only cause other more serious behavior problems.
When training a cat, you must remember that they are very curious. By short stepping that curiosity, you can easily train your pet to stay off the counters.

Tip of the Week:  Dog Grooming Tips

Proper grooming is an important part of pet care. It not only makes a companion animal look better, but contributes to his or her physiological and psychological health.

Brush your pet thoroughly every day. This helps keep his or her hair in good condition by removing dirt, spreading the natural oils throughout the coat, preventing tangles from forming and keeping the skin clean and free from irritation.
It is best to start brushing your pet at an early age, but do not despair if he or she is an older animal. It is possible to train one to enjoy grooming. Proceed slowly, and be sure to use treats and plenty of praise to make the experience fun!

Companion animals can get cavities and develop periodontal disease, so their teeth should be cleaned with a pet toothpaste at least twice per week. It is best to use a small toothbrush that has soft bristles. Cleanings performed by a veterinarian may also be required.

Bathe your companion animal once every two months or as often as needed. Be sure to brush him or her before each bath in order to get all of the mats out of his or her coat.

Fish Tips:  Signs of Stress and Disease on Tropical Fish and Goldfish

  1. Clamped Fins
The fish clamps its fins close against the its body. Experienced aquarists use this to quickly spot problems with their fish.
If you see that some of your fish have clamped fins and treat your fish immediately, you can usually cure them and avoid more serious stress and disease.
  2. Shimmy
Looks like the fish is swimming fast but staying in the same place. Shimmy is easy to spot, and if the fish is treated immediately, you can usually cure it and avoid more serious stress and disease.
  3. Ich Spots
    Ich
looks like tiny white spots on the body and fins of the fish. This is a common disease of fish, and if the fish are treated immediately, you can usually cure ich and avoid more serious stress and disease.
  4. Red or White Sores
Many things can cause sores on fish such as fights with other fish, scraping on sharp rocks, and small wounds that get infected and grow bigger. A new small sore can usually be cured. Older or larger sores are more difficult to treat, but sometimes you can succeed, and treating your fish will make it less likely that other fish will be infected by the fish with the sore.  Quite often these sores are flat or cause a depression in the surface of the fish. Less often a sore may be a bump that is raised above the surface of the fish.
  5. Gasping at the Surface
A fish that is gasping at the surface of the water is usually suffering from a lack of oxygen, that could be due to a lack of oxygen in the water or the fish's inability to absorb the oxygen from the water.
If there is just one or only a few fish gasping at the surface, but the other fish are normal, then the water probably has plenty of oxygen and you should immediately treat the gasping fish.

On the other hand, if almost all the fish are gasping, then there is probably a lack of oxygen in the water, and you should immediately do all of the following:

    • Check the Filter to be sure it's working properly.
If it's not working properly, immediately fix it.

    • Check the Temperature of the water on the thermometer, if this aquarium has a heater. If the temperature is out of the correct range, then adjust the aquarium heater.

    • Check the water surface, if there is oil or scum then carefully scoop water off the surface until you've removed two inches of water. Replace the water with fresh safe water.

    • Add Aquarium Salt until the water has a total of 1 Tablespoon of aquarium salt for each 5 gallons of water.

    • Add Water Conditioner, which is available in stores that sell pet fish. The correct dose is on the bottle.

Hamster Tips:  Care & Handling

  • For you future hamster owners, if you're going to buy a hamster, go in the evening time rather then the afternoon. They are more likely to be awake and active.
  • Be cautious to keep your hamster away from houseplants. Most are poisonous and if the hamster nibbles on them, it could be severly sick.
  • Picking up a hamster by the scruff of its neck is a wrong way to handle a hamster. Hamster babies were picked up this way only by their mothers. Adult hamsters usually protest being handled like that and could indeed squirt some urine. Instead, support the hamster by cupping your hands together (making sure it can't squirm its way out) or if your hands are big enough you can hold it with one hand but make sure you have the right touch and also support the bottom by the other hand.
  • If you decide to put your hamster in a room with the door closed, they may still be able to crawl under the door. Put an old towel down by the bottom of the door so they can't get out.
  • If your hamster is able to roam around a closed room, make sure it can't reach wires or even clothing material for gnawing on. Also watch out so it can't be squished either by your foot, or by a door.
  • If a hamster bites, it is strongly urged that you place the hamster down gently as possible. You do not want a reaction (by you) that could seriously hurt the hamster. Perhaps there was a good reason why it nipped you. Either it was being held improperly, or the smell of food on your hands could of caused the bite or nip. If the bite is severe and starts to bleed, disinfect it with some iodine or some other disinfecting medication. If it still swells up, consult a doctor.
  • If your hamster escapes, be sure to trap it by closing all doors carefully. Than grab some sunflower seeds and place them in the center of each room (Remember to know the amount of sunflower seeds placed). Within a hour there could be some seeds missing or eaten in a room. Now you know where your target is and finding it shouldn't be as hard.

Ten Top Tips...for Happy Dogs

  • Remember to reinforce good behaviour with attention & praise – don’t fall into the trap of ignoring your dog when its behaving well, and telling it off (ie. giving it attention) when it is not.
  • Avoid the use of harsh training techniques. Your dog will respond much better to kind treatment.
  • Obtain your puppy from the right environment – where it will have had lots of interaction with the world and people around it – such as a puppy raised in a busy family home with children, other pets etc.
  • Systematically socialise your puppy early and get it used to its new environment - different noises and types of people as well as cars, bikes etc. Attend puppy socialisation classes – they are good fun for you as well as your dog.
  • Keep young children under control – a dog can only put up with being pestered for so long – it hasn’t got the ability to say “You’re stressing me, please leave me alone!”
  • Attend reputable training classes and remember to practice at home.
  • Encourage your dog to play games. Different breeds respond to different games - find out what your dog enjoys the best.
  • Dogs should be exercised daily. Two reasonable walks a day are better than just one 3 hour walk at the weekend!
  • Periodically call your dog back to you when out walking. Place it on a lead and reward it with a brief game or a tasty bit of food and then let it off lead again. Your dog will then learn that coming back to you is good news and being placed on the lead does not mean the end of the walk!
  • Give your dog something to do when it is left at home on its own. An activity toy stuffed with some tasty food will help to keep it occupied.

Happy St. Patricks Day!!

We would like to wish our customers a Happy St. Patricks Day.  This week only we have our Sherpa products on sale, so please take advantage of this offer while it lasts.  The sale ends on Sunday, March 18th and next week we will have other products on sale.  As a subscriber to our newsletter you will receive special discounts and coupon codes so please make sure you check the newsletter box when signing in.

Tip of the Week:  Saltwater Fish

Some things that should be considered before getting a saltwater setup:

• Water must first be de-chlorinated, then mixed properly with artificial sea salt and changed regularly. Between 20 percent and 50 percent of the water should be changed out at least each month.

• Don't try to crowd too many fish into a tank.

• Be sure that the fish you buy are compatible so they don't attack each other.

• Find out how big the fish could get. Be sure they won't outgrow the size of tank purchased.

• Look at your fish often. Patches of discoloration, fins that are held in an unusual way may indicate an ailment that can be cured. But if the symptoms are already dramatic it may be too late.

• Be prepared for a long term commitment. Some fish live for decades in captivity.

• Be aware of the financial commitment involved. A beginner saltwater setup will cost about $200, and each clownfish is a $20-plus investment.

• Before going to the pet store, it is recommended that you go to the library or bookstore for books on fish care.

SPRING DOG HEALTHCARE TIPS:

Spring and summer months are a great time for you and your dog to enjoy the outdoors. However, the spring and summer months can also present unique dangers and health risks for your dog. Here are some dog health care tips that will help ensure that your dog remains safe in the heat.
In the Spring, check with your veterinarian to see what they recommend in terms of heartworm prevention . Heartworm disease is transmitted by mosquitoes and can be fatal. Heartworm disease is truly a silent killer and you can ensure that your dog stays heartworm free with just minimal prevention.
Monitor your dog's tolerance of the direct sun very closely. Never leave your dog out in the sun too long. Dogs can get sunburned just like people. Provide lots of shade for your pet. Dogs can become dehydrated in the sun, so provide plenty of cool, clean water. Older dogs and dogs with thick coats need special attention. Limit their exposure to the heat during hot summer days and exercise them in the morning or evening hours, when temperatures are cooler.

PET TIP OF THE WEEK:  CATS

Feline Acne

Cats can develop acne just as humans do. Usually it is only on the chin. It will appear as small black spots. The reasons for feline acne are as complex as it is for humans.

Sometimes a food allergy (such as chocolate with humans or milk with cats) can cause it or sometimes the cat does not clean its chin properly.

Tips on caring for feline acne:

It is important to keep food dishes clean. Acne has bacteria associated with it. The cat's chin comes in contact with the edge of the food/water bowl, leaving bacteria. The next time the cat uses the bowl, it can come in contact with this bacteria and spread it on the chin.

Use glass or metal food/water dishes. It is next to impossible to remove the bacteria from acne from plastic dishes.

Wash the food and water dishes daily. This removes the bacteria from the dishes and helps to keep the problem from getting worse. Also, in multi-cat households, it will help reduce the chance of others breaking out with it.

Bathe the cat's chin daily with a disinfectant soap/ solution from the vet. Nolvasan, Xenodine, Betadine soaps are a few of the ones to try. More severe cases may need to be washed twice a day. DO NOT USE HUMAN ACNE SOLUTIONS. These are too strong for cats and may cause serious problems. Don't try to pick the spots off, just clean it well.

Visit the vet if you can't get the acne to clear up within a week or two, or if the acne is severe or infected. The vet may prescribe antibiotics or other acne treatments for these cats. Once the acne is cleared up, keep an eye out for reoccurrences. Washing the cat's chin once a week is a good preventative measure.

Tip of the Week:  Bathing your Ferret

Unless your ferret gets into something very nasty, only bathe him about every 6 weeks.
  • Bathing strips the skin and fur of natural oils and over-bathing may make the ferret smell stronger than usual.
  • Ferrets like baths about as much as cats. Be ready.
  • Only use gentle shampoos labeled for ferrets, although most cat shampoos are ok. Avoid dog shampoos.
  • The best place to bathe a ferret is in a bath tub.
  • The kitchen sink is ok provided it does not have a garbage disposal.
  • Never, never, never attempt to bathe a ferret in a shower. A naked human is a vulnerable human.
  • Sheppard & Greene Shampoos such as Silver Sheen and Sable Sheen were developed specifically for ferrets and contain no harsh chemicals.

DOG TIP OF THE WEEK:  CRATE LOCATION

When crate training it's a good idea to remember that, although every dog needs his own space, canines are pack animals. Because of this they have an instinctual desire to be near the other members of their family.

It's a good idea to place the dog crate in a bedroom where your puppy can be near a family member when sleeping at night. It will make crate training less stressful to your puppy if he knows he is not alone at night. You'll also be able to know if your puppy needs to go out at night.

Gerbil Behavior Bits:

Gerbils are one of the few rodents that are awake during the day and sleep at night.  They're very sociable and enjoy each others company, so it's best to keep them in pairs, if possible.  If housed together at a young age, gerbils will live in harmony with each other regardless of their sex.  Gerbils are loyal to their "family members" and tend to mate for life, but will be aggressive toward newcomers if introduced too quickly.  In order to prevent unwanted litters, you'll want to make sure your gerbils are the same sex.

Cat tip of the week:  Why Won't Kitty Use the Litterbox?

Cats are naturally clean creatures. If your cat is not using her litter box, it may be because:

• Her litter is too dirty. This is the most common reason. Clean out her litter more often and see if this helps.

• Stress. Perhaps your feline is anxious about a move, new furniture or carpeting, a new person or animal in the house ...

• She is attracted to a previously soiled location. If your cat keeps returning to one spot, it may be a spot where another pet previously soiled. Make this spot less attractive to your pet by:

  • Put her food bowl there. Cats do not like to eliminate at the same place they eat.
  • Neutralize odour. A half and half solution of white vinegar and water will help to rid the area of any smell.
  • Cover the area with a plastic sheet. This will make it unpleasant to your kitty and discourage her from eliminating there.

• Your kitty may not like her brand of litter. Cats can be finicky; if you have recently changed the type of litter used, change it back. If not, experiment with other brands until you find one that kitty likes.

• Your cat may not know where her litter box is. Especially common with young kittens or after a move. Place the litter box in a clean, accessible, and relatively quiet location and show your cat where it is. You may want to put the box on the same floor as the cat to begin with.

• Your cat is marking his territory. Male cats sometimes spray urine to mark their territory; this is yet another good reason to be sure you neuter your pet (neutered males are less likely to spray).

If your cat has always used her litter box and has recently started to "mess", consider taking her to the vet to rule out any medical conditions.

A New Year is Upon Us!

Cold Weather Tips for your Pet:

1. Keep your cat inside. Outdoors, felines can freeze, become lost or be stolen, injured or killed. Cats who are allowed to stray are exposed to infectious diseases, including rabies, from other cats, dogs and wildlife.

2.  During the winter, outdoor cats sometimes sleep under the hoods of cars. When the motor is started, the cat can be injured or killed by the fan belt. If there are outdoor cats in your area, bang loudly on the car hood before starting the engine to give the cat a chance to escape.

3. Never let your dog off the leash on snow or ice, especially during a snowstorm—dogs can lose their scent and easily become lost. More dogs are lost during the winter than during any other season, so make sure yours always wears ID tags.

4. Thoroughly wipe off your dog's legs and stomach when he comes in out of the sleet, snow or ice. He can ingest salt, antifreeze or other potentially dangerous chemicals while licking his paws, and his paw pads may also bleed from snow or encrusted ice.

5. Never shave your dog down to the skin in winter, as a longer coat will provide more warmth. When you bathe your dog in the colder months, be sure to completely dry him before taking him out for a walk. Own a short-haired breed? Consider getting him a coat or sweater with a high collar or turtleneck with coverage from the base of the tail to the belly. For many dogs, this is regulation winter wear.

Farewell to 2006...

Pet tip of the week - Ferrets:

Ferrets are naturally curious animals and will tunnel under rugs, pillows, and other things.  They can squeeze through small spaces, so check for holes and window and screen openings.  You may want to have your ferret wear a harness with a bell on it so you can track its whereabouts.

Tip of the week (HAMSTERS) - Visitor tips on handling and taming new hamsters;

*    Keep hand sanitizer near cage and wash hands before handling to remove any food, animal or human smells that may cause your new hamster to bite.

*    Rest hand in cage for about 15 minutes daily for first two days...add favorite treat to palm of hand for next two days...pet but do not pick up for another two days.  After a week your hamster should be ready for handling.

*    If bitten do not give up...this is what the hamster wants.  It can take up to a month to tame a hamster.

*    Only handle your hamster in the evening after it has awakened for foraging.  They are nocturnal animals and may be more prone to bite if awakened from sleep during the day.

*    Hamsters are prone to biting if they feel unsafe...be sure to hold your hamster properly with the whole body supported in the palm of your hand.  Legs dangling and holding too tight can make your hamster nervous.  They are very aware of how fragile they are if dropped.

Coming soon!  PuchiBag pet bags and Lulu Jane products will be added shortly to our website!  PuchiBag carriers are made to order and are part of canine couture.  We will carry a limited stock of these bags so check back soon to see which bags we will have available.

December is Upon Us!

Doggles - What are they?  Well, to say the least they make a great doggy fashion statement!  Perfect for the coolest and sportest dogs.  The newest dog craze to hit the pet world are Doggles, Eye Wear for Dogs.  Not only are they a fashion trend but they are a great safety device for dogs that love car rides.  Doggles have a shatterproof lens that will protect your dog's eyes from flying debris.  Doggles also protect your dog's eyes from the harmful effects of the sun, providing UV protection.  We currently have a few Doggles in stock and hope to be adding more in the weeks to come.

Pet tip of the week - Finicky fish? Ever notice when you feed your fish pellets, they quickly gobble it up only to spit the food out again?  It's probably because the food is too hard - try soaking the pellets first just for a minute or two to soften them up.

A friendly reminder that the holiday season is in full swing, which also means that USPS, FedEx, and UPS can take an extra few days to bring your package to your door.  We kindly ask that if you are in need of a specific product ASAP to order in advance.  Processing and shipping are slightly delayed and will be until January.  Processing can take up to 3 days, followed by delivery time.
